The present work is a preparatory sketch for the figure of Venus in the painting "Venus à la Fontaine", which was exhibited at the Salon in 1742 as no. 23 (F. Boyer: Catalogue Raisonné de l´œvre de Charles Natoire, Archives de l´art francais, XXI, 1949, no. 61). The pendant work, "Venus à sa toilette", no. 24 (F. Boyer, no. 62), is currently housed in the Museum of Bordeaux, with the accompanying preparatory study for this Venus in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper.
