Carved wooden figures of the Virgin and Saint John, presumably West German, circa 1380/1400

Carved in the round, with partially overpainted older polychromy. A pair of slender figures standing in balanced contrapposto, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The Virgin is depicted with Her hands raised in prayer, whilst St. John holds a book and places his hand to his heart in a mournful gesture. The figures were originally intended as part of a crucifixion group.
The lower part of the figure of the Virgin is an older replacement. Wear with minor losses. Each 48 cm high.
