Probably Ulm circa 1500

A carved wooden Anna Selbdritt group, probably Ulm, circa 1500

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily. The polychromy entirely overpainted, except for the stamped gilt decor of the cloak.. A large figure of Saint Anne dressed in a matronly veil, standing in contrapposto and holding the diminutive figure of her daughter Mary in her left hand and the nude, blessing Christ Child with a globe in her right. Her girded, floor-length gown displays a rich interplay of vertical and compressed folds, which are flanked on each side by the undulating drapery of the cloak which she wears draped around her shoulders.
Several fine vertical cracks to the reverse. Minimal wear. Height 139 cm.
