Following a lead-time of almost three years, the Werkbund Exhibition 'Die Wohnung' (the home), the core element of which was the so-called 'Weißenhofsiedlung' (Weißenhof estate), was inaugurated in Stuttgart on 23rd July 1927. 16 architects built a total of 33 houses on the hillside for which Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, vice chairman of the Werkbund and artistic project manager at the time, had designed the development plan. Various types of housing were realised: from detached family homes up to four-storeyed apartment buildings in modernist design. Specifications regarding the construction included flat roofs and innovative floor plan and façade solutions. A new course was pursued in Stuttgart in every sense.
The architects' and interior designers' innovative building concepts were supported by modern public relations. The many photographs published by Dr Otto Lossen ensured a substantial reaction in international building magazines and outwardly coined the existing, not always uniform image of the Weißenhof estate to date. Apart from the press prints, published as postcards the photos ensured widespread circulation with lasting impact. Some of Lossen's best-known motifs pertain to this set of works as large-scale original prints.
