The Gardner manufactory in Moscow began producing high quality porcelain comparable to that of the Imperial manufactory just ten years after its founding. Tsarina Catherine ordered three extensive dinner services from them in 1777 for the feasts of the various Orders held at the Winter Palace: The St. George service for 80 persons, the St. Andrew service for 50 persons, and the St. Alexander service for 60 persons. Just one year later, the service was ready to deck the table for the feast for the members of the Order of the Holy and Victorious Martyr George.
