A Nuremberg silver gilt chalice made for the market law court of Pyrbaum

Waisted gadrooned foot supporting a narrow shaft with three scrolls and foliate decor. The waisted cuppa and lid with corresponding decor. The finial formed as a standing Roman soldier holding two shields with engraved coats-of-arms: One that of the market town of Pyrbaum in Oberpfalz, one that of the Barons of Wolfstein. H 43 cm, weight 498 g.
Marks of Reinhold Rühl, ca. 1661 - 64.

The lid is inset with a plaque inscribed: "Bey gehaltener Raths-Wahl Anno 1670, haben Herrn Richter, Kammerer und Schöpffen eines Erbarn Marck-Gerichts zu Pyrbaum diesen Becher verfertigen und zu ihrem Ehren-Gedächtnüs der Gerichts Laden beyfüegen lassen." and with the names of various judges, treasurers, and nine jurymen numbered 1 - 9, nos. 10, 11, and 12 vacant or removed.

The "Wolfsteiner" Barons were one of the most important ruling families in Upper Palatinate. Until their extinction in 1740, the towns of Sulzbürg and Pyrbaum were part of their domain.
