A pair of large Napoleon III silver plated bronze candelabra

Round earth mound bases with twisted branch decor. The shaft formed as an oak tree hung with game, the seven curved branches terminating in the candle holders. One base with a figure of a hunter and his dog, the other with a recumbent putto. Includes 12 removable drip pans and two finials for the central nozzles. H 55 cm.
Marks of Charles Christofle, 1853 - 56.

Christofle sent a similar pair of candlesticks with hunting motifs and putti to the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 (see: Bouilhet, 150 Ans d'Orfèvrerie Christofle, Paris 1981, p. 67, illus. 4.)
