Jan Fris

Still Life with a Rummer, Bread, and Fish

Oil on panel. 66 x 66 cm.
Signed and dated centre left: J. Fris. 1650..

This work depicts a rummer, a valuable dish, and a cloth draped over a table against a wall with a round niche. The table is lain with small bread rolls and fish cut into pieces, indicating a lent still life. The square format of this work is unusual for Jan Fris, and owes to the fact that the upper edge of the panel has been trimmed. An amendment which becomes obvious when one observes the chamfering of the other three edges.
The right side of the work depicts an indistinct round object which could represent a loaf of bread. Surprisingly, the loaf of bread is not shown in the photograph of the work published in 1945 (Vroom 1945, op. cit., subsequently published Vroom 1980, op. cit.) indicating that it was probably still overpainted when the work was photographed. It may have been painted over when the panel was trimmed to prevent the composition from appearing crowded in its smaller format. It is not known when the overpainting was removed, but the bread was visible when the work was restored in the 90s.
We would like to thank Dr. Fred Meijer for his kind support in cataloguing this lot.
