Probably Flemish early 16th century

An early 16th century Flemish carved wood figure of Saint Martin

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A depiction of Saint Martin on horseback, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. The saint is shown dividing his cloak with his sword for the beggar, who stands beside him leaning on a crutch and looking up hopefully at the piece of falling fabric. The work's strong sculptural presence is accentuated by the bulky depiction of the horse and by Saint Martin's calm stance.
The sword may be a replacement. Some vertical hairline cracks. Wear with losses to the plinth. 87 x 60 x 26 cm.
