South German circa 1510/1520

A South German carved limewood figure of a female saint, circa 1510/1520

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With presumably original older polychromy. A finely carved figure of a female saint standing in contrapposto. She wears a diadem and carries no identifying attributes, but the flat reverse of the piece indicates that it may originally been embedded in a larger iconographical context as part of a small altarpiece.
Minimal wear. Mounted on a velvet covered wooden plinth, the lower edge of the sculpture also covered with velvet. Height 20.5 cm (without plinth).
