A very fine boxwood netsuke of a laughing South Sea Islander. 19th century

The long-haired and bearded islander wearing only a short belted apron stands tall on long legs and supports himself on a staff while holding a drum stick in his right hand, the drum with mitsu-tomoe motif at his hip.
Height 12.8 cm

The netsuke typically combines features of the South Sea Islander (apron and drum) with the characteristic of an ashinaga (long legs). On the collector's index card the figure is erroneously identified as the giant Kochi.
