A small wood netsuke of a Niô on a waraji, by Jugyoku. Second half 19th century

The muscular guardian deity with a billowing shawl around his shoulders sits on a straw sandal and pulls at the long thong. Signed Ryûkôsai on an inlaid ivory tablet and Jugyoku on an inlaid mother-of-pearl tablet.
