An impressively large ivory netsuke of Eguchi no Kimi, by Tomochika. Mid-19th century

The courtesan Eguchi no Kimi sits with a long scroll over her knees on a very large reclining elephant, her robes minutely incised with a large asa-no-ha pattern and flowery scrolls to the borders. The writing on the scroll is illegible. Signed Chikuyôsai Tomochika with kaô.
Height 4.9 cm; width 7.7 cm

The representation of Eguchi no Kimi is a travesty on Fugen Bosatsu and refers to Saigyô Hôshi having a poetry exchange with the courtesan full of philosophical allusions.
