An ivory netsuke of a group of whitebait. Second half 19th century

Seven slender shirauo, the dorsal fins in low relief against the smooth bodies, are arranged into an oval, tactile shape. The eyes inlaid in mother-of-pearl and black. Inscribed Jugyoku.
Length 4.9 cm

The small shiraou was a popular subject with Jugyoku (see MCI, p. 271). When alive, the fish is transparent, but it becomes opaque white when dead. They were one of the many meibutsu (famous products) of Edo.
