A Hida school boxwood netsuke of a skeleton and a wolf, in the style of Shôko. Late 19th century

The human skeleton is giving the wolf a beating, the wolf lying on its back and warding off the blows. The eyes of the wolf of bone and black glass.
Height 4.3 cm

Meinertzhagen considered this popular subject to be a graveyard scene with “a skeleton of a man apparently avenging himself on the wolf that slew him.” (MCI, P. 748)
