South German late 15th century

A South German carved wooden figure of a Bishop Saint, late 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. The right side of the drapery reattached with dowels. With partially overpainted older polychromy.. A depiction of a saint in a bishop's robes and mitre designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He holds his hands raised in a blessing gesture and stands in balanced contrapposto. The figure's sculptural quality is enhanced by the rich drapery of his robes, in which prominent compressed folds contrast starkly with vertical pleats and undulating hems.
The fingers lost. A crack to the back of the shoulders. Some wear. Height 99 cm.

Provenance
