Probably Cologne circa 1500
A carved wood Annunciation scene, probably Cologne, circa 1500
Carved in the round. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Comprising a pair of figures. The angel is shown approaching the Virgin from the left with his right hand extended to impart his message. Mary stands facing towards the beholder in gentle contrapposto, holding a prayer book in Her hand and turning hesitantly towards the angel. The fine quality of the group is particularly evident in the composition and carving of the richly folded drapery.
The wings and left hand of the angel lacking. The tips of the fingers of the Virgin's right hand lost. Fine vertical cracks. Repairs to the plinths. Height 55 and 54 cm.
Austrian private ownership.
