Probably Spain 2nd half 16th century

A reliquary bust of Saint Agnes, presumably Spanish, 2nd half 16th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. The back of the head carved separately and attached to create a fully round depiction. Presumably original polychromy, the complexion overpainted. A half-figure depiction of the saint designed for a frontal viewpoint. She is depicted in contemporary clothing decorated with an ornate floral design to the reverse. The round depositorium closed with old glass containing a relic of Saint Agnes labelled "S Agueda VM" and a small depiction of the cross labelled "lignum (crucis)".
Losses to the fingers of the left hand. Minimal wear. Height 62 cm.
