The effect of the photograph 'Bois' shown here, which, like all Vandercam's experimental pictures, oscillates between figuration and abstraction, is based on his feeling for the surface texture and materiality of the object depicted, but, above all, it owes its effect to the extremely refined direction of light that allows the existing motif, the broken veneer, to be transformed into a carefully balanced composition of very finely-nuanced shades of grey.
