Fritz Koenig

Stuterei
1971/2005

Silver object, blackened. Ø 11.5 cm. Monogrammed 'FK' (scratched) verso. The positive mould of the motif was cast in 2005.

Horses play a central role in the life and work of the artist. He is familiar with these noble animals and he reflects the impetuous nature of the horse in the tiny reliefs, reminiscent of drawings, on the surface of the disc. These are individual phases of encounters between the spirited Arabian stallion Nuri Schalan, which has been at the stud since 1969, and mares on heat, which Koenig pursues with this 1971 'Stuterei' insignia. The sculptor 'paints' polyphony of the graphic texture into the abbreviation of a passionate formulation. Koenig repeatedly cuts insignia and medals for various occasions. Pictorial signs and found ciphers result in mixed creatures and again in a turbulent string of characters, which mutates into the typical pictorial language of the sculptor.
