Fritz Koenig

Kleines Stufenepitaph
1985

Iron, mounted. 10.5 x 42 x 18 cm. Monogrammed 'FK' (hammered). One of 2 exemplars.

Epitaphs with figures from 'quotations': sphere, hemisphere, quarter and half rods between tipped slabs, niches, and pits. 'It was only through the epitaph motifs that Koenig's abstraction gained a new meaning, also in terms of content. It leads via a rigorous 'emaciation' of the limbs and body structures to a three-dimensional symbolic language for the physical transience of human existence,' says J. A. Schmoll gen. Eisenwerth over King Epitaphe. (J. A. Schmoll gen. Eisenwerth über Epitaphe, in exhib. cat.: Fritz Koenig. Skulptur und Zeichnung, Munich 1988, p.55). Koenig's cubic cuts forego imaginary physical forms and allude to the classic epitaph of cube and sphere: based on the human body and yet transferred into the realm of Minimal Art.
