A fine Kyoto school ivory netsuke of a hungry wolf. Late 18th/early 19th century

Seated on his hind legs, with laid-back ears and wide-open eyes, the right forepaw resting on a hamaguri. The eye pupils of dark horn. Inscribed Okatomo in a rectangular reserve. Chipped and restored.
Height 3.4 cm

For this unusual subject compare the netsuke signed Tomotada, illustrated in MCI (p. 917) and the wood study of a wolf with hamaguri from the former collection Charles Greenfield, exhibited at Japan House Gallery in 1972 (cat. no. 35).
