A portrait miniature of Miss Bevan

Gouache on ivory. Portrait of a lady in a white chemise in a gilt bronze frame. Inscribed, signed, and indistinctly dated to the original backing: "Miss Bevan painted by W.J. Newton 8 August...". 9.8 x 7.5 cm. Frame: 17.5 x 12.5 cm.
Sir William John Newton, London, early 19th C.

The son of a printmaker, William John Newton specialised early on in portrait miniatures and soon became one of the most important masters of his era. He was appointed court miniaturist to King William IV in 1833 and raised to nobility in 1837.
