A Thüringian porcelain potpourri vase

Baluster form vases with original lids with flame finials. Bracket like fixtures to the interior to support lost insets. The fronts inscribed "Offrande" and decorated with a heron, a snake, and a sailing boat, the sides with anchors and bouquets of violets and forget-me-nots. The backs with temples and gold monogrammed obelisks inscribed "Ah! Qu´il est doux d´admirer ce qu´on aime". Blue mark R.g., remains of an inventory number in black varnish. H 23.6 cm.

Three identically formed vases in cat.: Gothaer Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts, Gotha 1995, no. II.82 - 84, listed as tea caddys or tobacco jars but mentioning that the pieces are more likely potpourris.

These rare pieces were probably made as courtly gifts.
