A dated Hachmann mortar

Cast bronze with slightly mottled honey coloured patina. Two banderoles surround the rim and base, the upper inscribed in Gothic minuscule "jan martens lennchen syn huisfrouw", and the lower dated "ANNO DOMINI 1581". Surface of the vessel divided by horizontal mouldings. Decorated with a heraldic shield flanked by two winged half-figures avers and a worn ornamental motif beneath a winged putto head to the reverse. Rectangular Gothic handles. H 16,5, D 15.7 cm. Weight 5.4 kg. Including a later pestle.
