A large Swiss apothecary's mortar

Golden brown cast bronze with natural patina and traces of green corrosion. Conical vessel with stepped base and protruding stepped rim. Cast below the rim with a broad banderole inscribed with the names of the patron and caster in majuscule "HANS FRIEDRICH WEITNAVER GOS MICH FIR HERREN DANIEL MITZ ANNO 1692". The display side cast with a laurel wreathed cartouche with the owner's mark and the initials "HNDW", the centre with a moulded band and two knob handles. H 27.5, D 32.6 cm. Weight 29.1 kg.
