A signed Paduan mortar

Cast bronze with mottled brown patina. Bell-shaped vessel on raised base. Decorated with beaded borders and mouldings. The centre cast with flowerheads, a wildcat, and a basket of flowers. The rim with stylised flowerheads and a plaque with the caster's signature "DACIANO COLBACHI E FIGLI FONDITORI IN PADOVA". H 12.9, D 14.6 cm. Weight 3.3 kg. Including a later pestle.
Daciano Colbachi, third quarter 18th C.

The first documentary evidence for the Colbachini family of bronze casters in Padua originates from the year 1732, when Pietro Antonio Colbachini ammended a bell. Three of his nine sons (Pietro, Antonio und Daciano) took over the running of the foundry, which focussed on bell casting. This exceptional mortar testifies to the quality of the foundry's products.
