Thomas Heeremans was a Haarlem landscape painter working in the second half of the 17th century. He was known for his winter landscapes painted in the style of Claes Molenaer. This picture, with its city walls, tower, rich figural staffage and diagonal composition particularly reflects the style of Claes Molenaer; a style which popularised the genre of winter landscape painting in Haarlem.
