Paulus Constantijn la Fargue

Dam Square in Amsterdam with the Waag

Oil on panel. 31 x 45.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Paulus Constantyn La Fargue pinxit 1780.

Paul Constatijn is considered one of the most talented and productive artists of the la Fargue family of painters in The Hague. His town panoramas, first of Rotterdam and The Hague, then of Leiden, Delft, Haarlem, and Amsterdam are valued as topographical documents for their precision, but also present atmospheric works of art populated by figures illustrating contemporary life. For this inspiration, Constantijn drew on the artistic tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, especially the works of Jan van der Heyden.
A similar view of Dam Square with the old weighing station was sold by Christie's in Amsterdam in 2002.

Provenance

German private collection.
