Adolf Carl Senff

Portraits of a Young Couple

Oil on canvas. Each 35.5 x 28 cm.
Signed and dated lower left and lower right: A. Senff 1832.

Carl Adolf Senff resided in Rome from 1816 to 1848 with just a few short absences in 1833 and 1845. Thus we can assume that these two portraits were painted in the city. Senff associated with the Nazarene circle and other northern European artists who had settled in the city and were visited by numerous travellers from Germany and Scandinavia. It was during this time that Senff painted many of his celebrated portraits, flower paintings, and copies after Raphael. His patrons at the time included King Frederick William III, for whom he copied five of Raphael's works, and the Russian royal family.
