A black-lacquered wood netsuke of a kabuki actor's headdress. 19th century

The iconic headdress of Ichikawa Danjûro VIII in his role of Hanatogawa Sukeroku from the kabuki play of the same name.
Height 4.6 cm

Sukeroku is one of the eighteen celebrated kabuki plays and was staged for the first time in Edo in 1713. The play is closely linked to the Ichikawa family. Ichikawa Danjûro VIII performed in the role of Sukeroku for the first time in 1832, a role he continued to perform until his alleged suicide in 1854.
