An ivory netsuke of a boar. Second half 19th century

Galloping, the eyes inlaid in black horn. Finely carved and stained, partly polished through use. Kaô.
Length 4.7 cm

The boar is said to be the bravest of all animals. It is the twelth of the zodiac animals and embodies the hours of 9 - 11 in the night as well as the month of october. The kaô resembles the one of Shuyo (cf. Lazarnick, p. 1013)
