Lower Rhine Region circa 1350

A Lower Rhenish carved wood figure of Saint Anne Teaching the Virgin to Read, circa 1350

Probably oak, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. Depicting the matronly figure of Saint Anne seated on a bench with the diminutive figure of the Virgin Mary held in her left hand, to whom she proffers an open book with her right. The sculpture is characterised by the fine quality of the carving, which is particularly evident in the detailed drapery of Saint Anne's veil. An indentation for a reliquary is carved into the saint's chest.
Wear with minor losses to the plinth and throne. Height 63 cm.
