Southern Netherlands second half 15th century

A South Netherlandish carved oak figure of Saint Catherine, second half 15th century

Carved in the round. With minimal remains of ground for former polychromy. A standing figure of the saint holding a book, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. The sword originally held in the saint's right hand is lost, but she can be identified as Catherine of Alexandria due to the vanquished figure of Emperor Maxentius shown at her feet. The fine carving of this piece is especially evident in the detailed drapery of the cloak.
Saint Catherine's right forearm and the hands of Maxentius lost. Wear with losses to the plinth. Height 61 cm.

Provenance
