Netherlands second half 15th century

A Netherlandish cast bronze figure of a court jester, second half 15th century

Engraved bronze figure with old patina, hollow reverse. A figure of a man in a fool's cap resting his chin on a flute. The figure's open mouth indicates that it may have originally formed part of a fountain, functioning as a water spout. A very similar counterpiece entered the collection of the Antikenkabinett in Vienna in 1880. That piece was already documented in Ambras in 1596 and is now housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (op. cit.).
Wear to the patin. A soldered repair to the centre of the reverse. Minor wear. 16 x 11 x 6 cm.

Provenance

Former Charles Crodel Collection, Munich. - Albrecht Neuhaus art dealership, Würzburg 2001. - Subsequently in a Rhenish private collection.
