Hans Klocker

A carved wood figure of Saint Eligius by Hans Klocker

Carved in the round, the reverse partially hollowed out. Mounted on a hollow wooden plinth. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the saint in bishop's robes standing in a gently swaying pose. He holds his attribute, the horseshoe, extended upon an open book in his left hand. The plinth bears a largely illegible inscription over several lines which may refer to the artist or the donor. Only the name "Hans" and the date "1496" can clearly be seen. The work's style allows it to be attributed to the sculptor Hans Klocker of South Tyrol. A comparable work by the artist is the figure of Saint Leonhard from Villnöß in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, which can be dated to around 1490/95 (op. cit., p. 439, no. 151, illus.).
The crozier replaced. Minimal wear throughout. Height 77 cm (without crozier).

Provenance

Private collection, Württemberg.
