A carved wood Nativity relief, workshop of Hans Klocker

The reverse flattened. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A detailed high-relief depiction of the Adoration of the Child. On the left Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary and on the right three angels holding the tips of the Virgin's robes upon which the nude Christ Child rests. The ox, the ass and two shepherds are depicted in the landscape behind the rickety architecture of the stable. The work shows distinct stylistic similarity to a relief depicting the nativity in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London which is attributed to the workshop of Hans Klocker, a sculptor active in Brixen in South Tyrol. The parallels in the composition, costumes, drapery, and facial features are so distinct that this work can also be attributed to Klocker's workshop and dated to around 1500.
Minimal wear. Mounted in a newer wooden surround. 90 x 66 x 9 cm (without surround).
