Grasser, circle of

A carved wood figure of John the Baptist, circle of Erasmus Grasser

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the saint holding the lamb of God, dressed in a girded fur robe and long cloak and standing in contrapposto on a round plinth. This Bavarian sculpture can be allocated to the early 16th century on stylistic grounds and displays great similarity, especially in the facial features, to a relief depiction of Saint Jerome found on the back of the choir stools of the Frauenkirche in Munich (Berlin, Skulpturengalerie) which was made between 1500-1512 in the workshop of Erasmus Grasser in Munich.
The right hand and the lamb possibly replaced. Minimal wear throughout. Height 93 cm.
