A Berlin KPM porcelain plate with the Loreley

Unidentified model. The well decorated with a copy of a painting by Carl Begas, the border with trellis pattern interspersed with bouquets in four rocaille reserves. Blue sceptre mark over KPM, red imperial orb mark, red painter's mark I., pressnummer 34. D 24.4 cm.
1837 - 44.

This plate is decorated with a replica of the work "Die Lureley", which was painted in 1835 by Carl Joseph Begas (1794 - 1854), an artist born in Heinsberg. The work can still be viewed today in the artist's home town in the Begas Haus, formerly the Kreismuseum Heinsberg.

Anna von Preussen received a large dinner and dessert service from her uncle, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV on occasion of her marriage to Prince Friedrich Wilhelm von Hesse Kassel in 1853. The service comprised 25 dessert plates like this one painted with "figural subjects" in round and octagonal reserves after paintings. 22 plates from the service are housed in the Hessisches Hausstiftung Schloss Fasanerie, and four identical ones once belonged to the Twinight Collection (sold by Lempertz Berlin, 6th April 2019, lots 149 - 152). All pieces bore early manufactory marks which dated to long before the marriage. Since the present work brings the number of known plates up to 27, it could either have belonged to the wedding service or have been sold separately by KPM.
