A mortar made for Johan van der Beeck

Coppery gold bronze with dark brown patina. With one broad and one narrow horizontal band of decor, the lower one with two winged male and female grotesques supporting a medallion with a portrait of a man in profile and a frieze of stylised acanthus. With a band inscribed in capital letters around the rim: "IOHAN VAN DER BEECK ERT GOET BAVEN ALLE CREATVREN 1564". Patina reapplied. H 16.9, D 16.7 cm. Weight c. 6.1 kg.
