A carved oak relief from a crucifixion scene, Antwerp, first quarter 16th century

Carved from two blocks. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. This pierced high-relief group must originally have formed part of an altarpiece with a crucifixion scene. It shows the fainting Virgin supported by the two Marys whilst Saint John stands behind Her with his eyes raised towards the cross.
Saint John's right arm lost, the right edge of the base reattached. Very minor wear. 39.5 x 30.5 x 8.5 cm..
