In her catalogue of the Bushell Collection Hollis Goodall distinguishes between two types of Mongolian archers. Those with an European appearance such as a broad-brimmed hat, curly hair and protruding eyes and those with obvious Chinese influence (Los Angeles 2003, Catalogueno. 16 and 37). The piece offered belongs to the latter type. The loosely belted robe and headgear evokes the Chinese general Kan'u.
