A St. Petersburg porcelain dinner plate from the hunting service for Catherine II

Plate with scalloped rim, the well painted with game in a forest landscape within a gilt rocaille surround, the lip with black trellis pattern and flowerheads on green ground. Blue mark KII. D 25 cm.
Imperial Porcelain Manufactory St. Petersburg, before 1796.

Tsarina Catherine II ordered a sumptuous thousand-piece service for her hunting lodge Zarskoje Selo in 1766. The service was completed in 1768. It has been proven that at least 29 painters collaborated on the decoration of the service, which included 322 painted plates. The Tsarina was so pleased with the service that she later ordered additional pieces from the Imperial Russian manufactory.
