A box with bevelled edges by Abraham Roentgen

Veneer of rosewood, kingwood, burr walnut, mahogany and ebony on oak, secondary woods solid mahogany and cherry, with gilt bronze, brass and steel mounts. Of rectangular shape with hinged top and handle, protruding base resting on four curved and flaring bracket feet. A finely engraved cartouche-shaped lock plate opens by pushing a button which activates a spring mechanism to reveal the keyhole. The box contains a large, mahogany veneered compartment and a shallow secret compartment in the right side of the base which can be opened by pushing a hexagonal button placed in the inner right side. Decorated throughout with alternating bands of vertically placed rosewood, black ebony, brass stringing and broad strips of burr walnut. The lid inset with a small brass cartouche engraved with a dragon. H 18.5, W 29.3, D 18.4 cm.
