The Biblical source for this scene can be found in Luke 1:39-45. It describes the Virgin Mary's visit to her relative Elisabeth (hence the name “Visitation”). When Elisabeth, who was six months pregnant at the time, heard Mary calling out in greeting “the babe leaped in her womb“. Elisabeth in turn greeted Mary with the words “blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?“
