Monogrammist L.L.

Rome
c. 1855/1856

Album containing 35 albumen prints. Each approx. 20 x 25 cm. Individually flush-mounted to album pages, each annotated in ink in French on the page lower right. Leather binding with gold embossed title and monogram L.L.

Both the identity of the artist behind the monogram L.L., the author of this impressive album, as well as its provenance, remain unknown. The title and the inscriptions on each of its pages indicate that the artist was a photographer of French origin. Francesca Bonetti identifies them as a "cultivated amateur", whose photographs are characterized by their original style and sophisticated compositions. The author initially follows the traditional dramaturgy of the commemorative album, photographing the ancient buildings of Rome as well as the squares, churches, palaces and monuments of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. However, it is above all the photographs of the modern city, captured in a particularly picturesque manner with the banks of the Tiber from an elevated viewpoint, which have their own very special charm.
