Views of landscapes and outdoor scenes occupy an important place in Gabriele Münter's work from the very beginning. Compared to other subjects they are dominant from the earliest years and, regardless of where Münter was living, her looking at nature defined her work.
As in the case of our painting, Münter's landscapes usually present a domesticated culture, a landscape defined and shaped by people and featuring houses, churches, castles and paths. Pictures of gardens are relatively rare in the artist's oeuvre, and our view of a garden in early summer thus seems all the more significant (see exhib. cat. Gabriele Münter. 1877-1962. Malen ohne Umschweife, München/Humlebaek/Cologne 2017-2019, p. 55). The blossoming trees suggest that it is still early summer - as do the vegetation's richly nuanced shades of green. The contrast between the vigorous, short brushstrokes for the depiction of nature and the emphatically two-dimensional formulation of the house fronts in the background is also formally appealing. Through the bold palette primarily consisting of green and violet tones and the deliberate accents set in the yellow houses, Münter evokes an evening ambience possessing a highly concentrated atmosphere.
