A Tibetan thangka with two arhats and Moheyan. 18th century

With arhat Kanakabharadvaja with his hands in meditation pose in his lap in the upper left, and arhat Kanakavatsa holding a jewel lasso in both hands in the upper right, attended by the potbellied monk Moheyan (Hvashang) with a rosary and an conch in his hands below, all above two guardians of the four directions, Virupaksha and Vaishravana. Mounted on a board. Framed and glazed.

According to a Tibetan legend, Hvashang was sent to India by a Chinese Tang emperor to invite the sixteen great arhats so that they may transmit Buddhism throughout China and Tibet.
