A finely carved netsuke of Daruma. Mid-19th century

The Zen patriarch stands in billowing robes wearing only one shoe, his arms hidden in the long sleeves looking up to the sky. His kesa is held by a ring (kan) partially inlaid in metal. The eye pupils of black horn. Inscribed Hôjitsu on a rectangular mother-of-pearl tablet.
Height 4.5 cm

Daruma wearing only one shoe refers to his return to India. According to legend, three years after his death Daruma returned to India carrying with him one shoe, leaving the other shoe in his tomb in China.
