A Berlin KPM porcelain model of a shepherd with a pipe as an allegory of fire

A very rare and important allegorical figure depicting a standing shepherd leaning against a tree stump and lighting a pipe, with a burning torch held beneath his right foot and carrying a set of bellows and a tobacco bag on his back. The finely painted figure stands on a triangular rocaille base. Blue sceptre mark, blue cursive letter D. The head and the left arm reattached, the spill in his right hand defective, the pipe replaced. H 24.2 cm.
1764/65, the model by Friedrich Elias Meyer.

The Tielebier collection, auctioned by Lempertz Berlin, auction 1030 on 24th May 2014, lot 10.

Literature

Cf. Lenz, Berlin 1913, vol. 1, illus. 6 with the note that the owner of the figure was "Seine Majestät der Kaiser". Illus. in Baer, Von Gotzkowsky zur KPM, Berlin 1986, no. P 131, also illustrated on the cover of the catalogue. The sculptor Friedrich Elias Meyer created a series of shepherd and shepherdess figures for the manufactory of Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky and the models were later adopted by KPM.
